Insurance information for visiting students and scholars

MIT has several different types of visiting students and scholars. All visiting students need to have health insurance, but requirements and procedures vary.

Special Students
  • Are taking undergraduate or graduate classes for one term.
  • Are not candidates for an MIT degree

If you are a special student, coverage for most services at MIT Medical is included with tuition.

If you are registered as a full-time student, you will be automatically enrolled in, and billed for, the MIT Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), which provides comprehensive coverage, including prescriptions, diagnostic tests and specialists outside of MIT Medical, and hospitalization. If you want the plan, you don’t need to do anything. But if you already have comparable insurance from a U.S.-based insurer that will meet your needs while you are at MIT, you may be eligible to waive this coverage.

If you’re a less-than-full-time student who is not automatically enrolled in the MIT SHIP, you may be eligible for this coverage if you want it. Call the MIT Student Insurance Office at 617-253-1322 for more information.

Exchange Students

EXCHANGE STUDENTS are studying at MIT as part of an exchange program between MIT and Cambridge University, the National University of Singapore, or the Nanyang Technological University.

If you are an exchange student, coverage for most services at MIT Medical is included with tuition.

If you are registered as a full-time student, you will be automatically enrolled in, and billed for, the MIT Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) which provides comprehensive coverage, including prescriptions, diagnostic tests and specialists outside of MIT Medical, and hospitalization.

  • Were invited to MIT to do research and are registered in Course NIV.
  • Are not taking classes for academic credit.
  • Will stay at MIT for a specified period from three weeks to one year.

All Visiting Students will be automatically enrolled in, and must purchase, the MIT Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). Visiting Students may also purchase optional family coverage through the Gallagher Student Health website

Exchange Scholars
  • Are enrolled in a doctoral program at a participating institution (UC-Berkeley, Brown, Chicago, Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, Penn, Princeton, Stanford, Yale).
  • Are taking classes or doing research at MIT for a limited period of time.

If you are an exchange scholar, coverage for most services at MIT Medical is included with tuition. Call the MIT Student Insurance Office at 617-253-1322 for more information.
